We've been telling folks for years flying cars existed --but who knew proof would come to us from the sleepy little town of Coram, NY? That's where this morning the owner of a Honda Accord took a 150 foot jump off a dirt hill and flew into the the side of a two-story house. So maybe it's not so much proof of flying cars -- but it sure as hell is entertaining. Although normally we prefer our entertainment without death and dismemberment. Pairings on elliptic curves have been used as cryptographic primitives for the development of new applications such as identity based schemes. For the practical applications, it is crucial to provide efficient and secure implementations of the pairings. There have been several works on efficient implementations of the pairings. However, the research for secure implementations of the pairings has not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we investigate vulnerability of the pairing used in some pairing based protocols against side channel attacks. We propose an efficient algorithm secure against such side channel attacks of the eta pairing using randomized projective coordinate systems for the pairing computation.

We present an investigation into the security of three practical pairing algorithms; the Tate, Eta and Ate pairing, in terms of side channel vulnerability. These three algorithms have recently shown to be efficiently computable on the resource constrained smart card, yet no in depth side channel analysis has yet appeared in the literature. Since the secret parameter input to the pairing can potentially be entered in either of the two possible positions, there exist two avenues of attack, i.e. e(P,Q) or e(Q,P) where P is public and Q is private. We analyse the core operations fundamental to pairings and not only highlight how each implementation may potentially succumb to a side channel attack, but also show how one path is more susceptible than the other in Tate and Ate. For those who wish to deploy pairing based systems we make a simple suggestion to improve resistance to side channel attacks.

Replies: 0 Last poster: BaT at 02-07-2006 19:55 Topic is Open Zoals de topice-titel aangeeft, heb ik problemen met mijn 23" Apple Cinema Display. Ik heb het scherm nu bijna een maand en wil niet anders meer. Ik gerbuik het voornamelijk onder Windows op me PC bak, maar heb ook af en toe me PowerBook G4 aanhangen en me toekomstige MacBook. Daarover in een ander topic later meer Ik heb nu sinds een paar dagen sporadisch, dat de side buttons niet meer werken zodra windows gestart is, van af vandaag is het bij elke Windows sessie zo : Staat er het scherm niet aan als je boot, moet ik dus opnieuw booten, want tijdens de BIOS post werken de knoppen wel ineens .... Nu kijk ik, en zie ik dat hij als Plug&Play monitor wordt herkent... en als ik voor update driver kies, zegt ie dat het niet nodig is ... Opzich is het wel irritant, want ik kan zo dus niet meer de brightness van m'n monitor instellen > tenzij ik reboot en het tijdens de BIOS post doe... want dan werken dus alle knoppen wel gewoon. Mijn vragen : Heeft iemand dit eerder gehad met ACD inc. met windows ? (heb het nog niet gechecked of het probleem zich ook voordoet onder OSX, maar ik denk het niet, daar komt bij, het werkte eerste wel onder windows, dus waarom nu niet meer) Is dit op te lossen met een drivertje, zo ja welke ? Kleine update: Heb de computer een paar keer gereboot, steeds weer hetzelfde : werkt wel tijdens de BIOS post, maar niet zodra Windows desktop verschijnt... Heb toen de PC uitgezet, en de DVI kabel er-uit/er-op-nieuw-in-gedaan en nu werkt ie wel weer ineens. Vaag, maar gelukkig dat ie het weer normaal doet. Voor de rest is er niks veranderd in Windows, hij wordt ook nog steeds als een normale plug&play monitor gezien... dus was geen driver-bug van windows, en de DVI kabel zat er eerst ook wel goed in (anders krijg je geen beeld en het verklaard niet waarom hij wel werkte tijdens de BIOS posts...). Het enige wat ik nu nog kan doen; is over een paar dagen hopenlijk melden dat het probleem nog niet terug is gekomen, en het dus toch blijkbaar aan de aansluiting van de DVI kabel lag...

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety apparently likes it like we do -- releasing the results over the weekend of the 2006 side impact crashworthiness (we didn't even make that word up!) tests, and now we're treated to 75 articles in papers across the country all saying "Study: Side Air Bags Improve Safety." Well -- umm -- yeah, that's true, and thank you Associated Press for your hard work in making it clear to the whole world it's better to smack your head into a pillowy cushion of air than a piece of hard industra-plasti-vinyl with metal underneath. Geez. Oh, the results? Is that what you're asking for? Well... ...the Chevy Impala and Toyota Avalon both received "good" ratings, the Buick Lucerne and Hyundai Azera received "acceptable" ratings and the Buick LaCrosse and Chrysler 300 received "marginal" ratings -- all when tested with side airbags. Of the large cars tested without side airbags, the Chrysler 300, Ford Five Hundred and Ford Crown Victoria -- all received ratings of "Poor." It should be noted that when the Ford Five Hundred was tested last year with side airbags, it received a Gold Medal -- so it's got that going for it. So remember kids, side airbags save lives.
