At a conference in Japan, a Dell laptop suddenly exploded into flames, and lucky for its owner the fiery blast occurred while the PC was sitting on a table and not in his lap. An onlooker reported that the notebook continued to burn, producing several more explosions over the course of about five minutes.
The model of the offending Dell notebook wasn't mentioned, but since it was of the Windows persuasion, we can now boast that we are unbiased in our reports of fiery laptops, both Mac and PC. It's only a matter of time before something like this happens on an airplane. – Charlie White

Averatec's releasing a small ultra-portable notebook that's not altogether wimpy in terms of power. It has an intel Pentium M 1.1 GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 80GB hard disk, dual layer DVD, USB 2.0, firewire, memory card reader and VGA port. Everything looks as good as a larger sized notebook except for the CPU, which needs to be smaller and draw less power due to this system's size.

Our youngest daughter recently graduated from high school. Among the graduation gifts her friends received were a wide variety of laptop computers. All shapes, all sizes. Most were given as gifts since they would be going on to college, and the family computer would have to stay home. Our daughter will be getting one, but she wants to wait till closer to school to get the latest and greatest. If you are in the same situation, or know someone who is, PC Magazine has a review of some of the new smaller, ultraportable laptops in their latest edition. There is a wide selection that is reviewed, and with the performance testing they do, should make that purchasing decision a little easier.
