CWmike writes "The US government may start issuing terror alerts using Facebook and Twitter, which were thrust again in the spotlight recently as lifelines in Japan. An AP report Thursday, based on a 19-page draft of the plan that the news service obtained, said DHS is working to overhaul the current color-coded terror alert system. 'The new terror alerts would ... be published online using Facebook and Twitter 'when appropriate,' the AP reports, 'but only after federal, state and local government leaders have already been notified.' Zeus Kerravala, an analyst at the Yankee Group, said the government entrusting something as critical as terrorist alerts to Facebook and Twitter shows how important social networking sites have become to people's lives. 'There are hundreds of millions of people using Facebook and Twitter. For many of them, it's their primary communication tool,' Kerravala said. 'That means it's a great way to get information to a massive number of people. Maybe the best.'" Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Maryland Police Put Activists' Names On Terror List
Meer over: Maryland Police Put Activists' Names On Terror List|2008-10-09 05:12:30
aaandre writes with word of a Washington Post story which begins: "The Maryland State Police classified 53 nonviolent activists as terrorists and entered their names and personal information into state and federal databases that track terrorism suspects, the state police chief acknowledged yesterday. The police also entered the activists' names into the federal Washington-Baltimore High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area database, which tracks suspected terrorists. One well-known antiwar activist from Baltimore, Max Obuszewski, was singled out in the intelligence logs released by the ACLU, which described a 'primary crime' of 'terrorism-anti-government' and a 'secondary crime' of 'terrorism-anti-war protesters.'" According to the article, "Both [former state police superintendent Thomas] Hutchins and [Maryland Police Superintendent Terrence] Sheridan said the activists' names were entered into the state police database as terrorists partly because the software offered limited options for classifying entries." Reader kcurtis adds "The State Police say they are purging the data, but this is one more example (on top of yesterday's news that datamining for terrorists is not feasible due to false positives) of just how badly the use of these lists can be abused."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

An unlikely new front has opened up on the war on terrorism — the scattered South Pacific archipelago of Kiribati, one of the world's smallest nations. United States authorities are alarmed over a plan by a German citizen, linked to the September 11 terrorist attacks, to build a flying school on one of the former British colony's outlying islands. Wolfgang Bohringer has been linked to Mohammed Atta, the mastermind of the attacks on America in 2001. Mr Bohringer arrived in Kiribati (pronounced "Kiribas") a year ago with plans to build a flight school, but has since left, his whereabouts unknown and his intention a mystery.
